The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is an affectionate, playful, intelligent dog.  They repay their owner's care and attention with an endearing devotion.  Cavaliers are not kennel dogs.  Because of four hundred years of close contact with their owners as lap dogs they make wonderful companions.  They are happy, outgoing, loving dogs who want to love you and be loved in return.  They get along well with children, cats, and other dogs.  Cavalier puppies do not thrive when left alone all day without human companionship or the company of another animal.

Cavaliers require regular exercise.  They have an instinct to chase and should be on a leash or in a fenced backyard.  Cavaliers NEVER become "STREET-WISE." 

Cavaliers will alert their owner to the arrival of someone new, but they seem to regard all strangers as friends they haven't met yet.  People who travel find it easy to take their Cavaliers along.  Their strong desire to be with their owners makes them willing travelers. 

While Cavaliers are clean, they require regular grooming.  A great deal of time and effort is not necessary if you thoroughly comb and brush  your Cavalier once a week.  Their ears need particular attention and should get a quick combing every few days to prevent tangles and mats.  Cavaliers do shed, particularly in the spring and fall, but a little all of the time.

The Cavalier comes in four colors Blenheim, Tricolor, Ruby, and Black and Tan.  A Blenheim has rich chestnut markings that are broken up by a white background.  The ears must be red with a white blaze coming up from the nose through the eyes.  A thumbprint in the center of the white blaze on the top of the head is very desired.  A tricolor has jet black markings broken up by a white background.  With rich tan markings over the eyes, on the cheeks, and on the underside of the ears and tail.  A Ruby is a solid rich chestnut color.  A Black and Tan is solid jet black with tan markings over the eyes, cheeks, inside the ears, on the chest, legs and underside of the tail.
